Broward County YLS Sponsors Pro Bono Recognition Breakfast
On Friday, October 30, 2015, the Broward County Bar Association – Young Lawyers Section (YLS) sponsored a pro bono recognition breakfast in honor of the National Pro Bono Week. In attendance was Ms. Melisa Malone of the Legal Aid Service of Broward County, as well as local attorneys who wanted to heed this opportunity to recognize pro bono achievement in Broward County. As part of the event, YLS recognized those who have dedicated 20 hours or more to pro bono representation between October 2014 and October 2015. Also recognized were the names of nine Broward County attorneys who logged over 100 hours during that time frame. YLS, through their Pro Bono Committee Chair, Lindsay Massillon, Esq., also called those in attendance to make a professional New Year’s resolution to commit to pro bono service for 2016. Alan Pascal, Esq., former Chair of the 17th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee, echoed the call to action and pointed out that the number of those attorneys providing pro bono service is increasing, but there is always more to do. One of the best ways Broward attorneys can become involved in pro bono service is to volunteer for the Legal Aid Hotline on Tuesdays from 2PM to 5PM. For the past few years, YLS has challenged local voluntary bar associations to commit their membership to staffing the hotline every Tuesday for a chosen month during the year. YLS has already received commitments from eight bar associations so far for the 2016 year and hopes to achieve their goal of full staffing for 2016.
