The Basic Skills Course Requirement (BSCR) helps ensure all attorneys begin their legal careers with a thorough and practical understanding of the law.
There are two phases to completing the requirement.
Phase 1: Practicing with Professionalism
All newly admitted Bar members, regardless of age and/or years of practice in another state, must the 8-hour PWP course within their first year of admission (or no more than 12 months before admission).
The YLD produces a live webinar version of PWP twice a year, and a recorded version is available on demand through The Florida Bar’s InReach platform.
Phase 2: Basic Skills Courses
Within your first three years of practice, you must complete 21 hours of Basic Skills Courses. Classes are typically 7 hours long, so taking three Basic Skills Courses generally meet the requirement. Courses cover a range of practice areas from Family Law to Appellate Practice. BSC courses are available on demand through The Florida Bar’s InReach platform.
Ongoing Continuing Legal Education
After your first three years of practice (and for every three-year reporting cycle thereafter), you are required to complete a total of 30 credit hours of which:
- At least 3 of the 30 hours must be approved technology courses.
- At least 5 of the 30 hours must be approved legal ethics, professionalism, substance abuse or mental health and wellness courses; 2 of the 5 hours must be the mandatory (and free) Florida Legal Professionalism course.
Members are notified of their CLE reporting requirements via email and self-report compliance online through the MyFloridaBar Member Portal.
