Board Highlights

Lara B. Bach is representing and arguing on behalf of the YLD before the Florida Supreme Court in support of the Parental Leave Rule. This Rule would require courts to grant a continuance for lead counsel’s parental leave unless substantial prejudice is shown.

Iris A. Elijah is chairing the YLD’s Law School Exploratory Committee which is developing a new program aimed at replacing the former Law Student Division with a more efficient means for law school and law students to connect and work with The Florida Bar YLD.

Giselle Gutierrez and Marianne Curtis are organizing The Florida Bar’s Basic CLE Program in Miami on November 8, 2019 that will be focused on Evidence. The program boasts a wide-range of topics and diverse lecturers.

Schuyler Smith is co-chairing the Online Resources Committee which will be creating new content for the Legal Accelerator website which will include diverse topics and speakers on a variety of issues frequently faced by young lawyers.

Michael Levine, along with 17th Circuit Governor Todd Baker, is organizing The Florida Bar’s Basic CLE Program focusing on Personal Injury cases.  The program will take place in Ft. Lauderdale in March of 2020 and will feature a variety of practitioners from both the plaintiff and defense bars.  Michael is also co-chairing next year’s Robert Orseck Moot Court Competition which will take place at The Florida Bar’s annual convention.

Section Highlights

The Dade County Bar Association in conjunction with the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, Haitian Lawyers Association, the Cuban American Bar Association, and the Wilkie D. Ferguson Bar Association came together on July 25 to tackle the presence of bullying and sexual harassment in the legal community.

The Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers and Dade County Bar Association will be presenting its second annual “Style and Substance: Developing & Maintaining a Mentor-Mentee Relationship.”   The program will take place on October 17, 2019 from 1-2:30pm and be moderated by 11th Circuit Governor Marianne Curtis.   To RSVP please click here.

The Cuban American Bar Association will be hosting its Annual Judicial Luncheon on August 9, 2019 from 11:30 am 2:00 pm.  Chief Judge Bertila Soto, Judge Monica Gordo, and Judge Adalberto Jordan will join as panelist during the luncheon. To RSVP, click here.

Marbely Hernandez, President of the Miami-Dade League of Prosecutors (“LOP”), is an impressive young woman. She was named Rising Star this year at the American Inns of Court Women of Distinction for her work through LOP. She is a Division Chief at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and, through her work with LOP, she helped author and file an amicus brief with the Florida Supreme Court. + READ MORE
