Each year, the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division recognizes the most outstanding young lawyer service project in Florida with the Affiliate Member Service Project of the Year award. To be considered for the award, the affiliate must submit an application explaining how its innovative project served its young lawyers and provided for the enrichment of its membership.
The recipient of the 2016 Affiliate Member Service Project of the Year award was the Broward County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (“Broward YLS”), for its 2016 Young Lawyers Boot Camp. The Broward YLS organized and presented programming, materials, workshops, and guest speakers with an eye toward giving new attorneys practical solutions for problems they face in the first years of practice. Through mock depositions, evidentiary hearings, skits, and panels, new attorneys got “boot camp” style training in a fun way.
The Broward YLS outdid themselves when it came to planning this series of events. In February, the Boot Camp series kicked off with a workshop on dispositive motions, complete with specific motion practice tips from judges and attorneys on motions in both civil and criminal practice. In March, the series continued with an evidence workshop, with tips on authentication, proper predicates, and an interactive session where each participant got a chance to practice entering exhibits into evidence while receiving critiques from panel members.
Broward YLS then hosted a third session aimed at deposition practice. The participants observed a mock deposition of a physician based on a hypothetical accident, and were provided with strategies on deposition preparation and the taking the deposition itself. Last, the Broward YLS demonstrated through skits a number of difficult situations young face, such as arguments made in court with interruptions and insults; unilaterally set deposition or hearing dates; arguments over discovery requests and objections to same; and various issues that arise during depositions. A judicial panel then provided commentary and advice as to how to handle each situation successfully.
On top of all this wonderful programming, Broward YLS received CLE approval for the participants’ activities, and provided networking opportunities for the panelists and attendees following each session. The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division cannot say enough about the outstanding efforts the Broward YLS put forth on behalf of its young lawyers. The Florida Bar YLD is so proud of all of the work that local bar associations and affiliates do to enrich the careers and lives of the young lawyers where they live and practice. These educational and social events not only welcome new lawyers into the practice, but also give them skills that will serve them throughout their careers. Congratulations and thank you to the Broward County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section – we can’t wait to see what you do in 2017!
