Annually, the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division publicly recognizes the best affiliate public service project of the year. To be considered for the award, the affiliate must submit an application and explain how (i) the public and local community were served and (ii) the project enhanced the relationship of young lawyers to the public and local community. Additional consideration is given to innovative public service projects.
The recipient of the 2016 Affiliate Public Service Project of the Year award was the Brevard County Bar Association (“BCBA”), Young Lawyer’s Division. The BCBA, Young Lawyers Division hosted its inaugural Veterans’ Estate Planning Seminar in May 2016. From the idea itself to the marketing efforts in the Brevard County community to the experienced trusts and estates and probate attorneys that were willing to devote their time to this project, this Public Service Project was a huge success.
In targeting a local group of people in need of legal services (U.S. Veterans) – families are much better served when a will and other related documents are in place, the BCBA Young Lawyer’s Division was able to assist the public while enhancing the relationship of young lawyers to the community. The Veterans’ Estate Planning Seminar opened with two speakers: a local attorney who generally discussed the basic necessities in planning for the inevitable and a retired military commander who discussed how the Disabled American Veterans organization can assist in attaining various survivor benefits through the VA. Following these brief presentations, various local attorneys were stationed in different rooms (for confidentiality reasons) to meet with and take information from each person interested in obtaining a will and related documentation. From there, the intake forms (attending veterans) were divided amongst volunteer local trusts and estates and probate attorneys as these attorneys prepared the necessary documentation based on the specific circumstances of the person.
The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division truly appreciates the efforts of the BCBA Young Lawyers Division and all affiliates for the time and work put in giving back to local communities. We look forward to the BCBA’s expansion of the Veterans’ Estate Planning Seminar in 2017 as well as learning about the many other great public service projects occurring across the State of Florida.
