The City, County and Local Government Law Section of The Florida Bar stands at the heart of the community. We are comprised of nearly 1700 lawyers committed to serving the public. Our members represent cities, counties, airport authorities, housing authorities, government districts, school districts and other local governments on various issues. Our clients are charged with maintaining and improving the health and safety of the community. The Section strives to serve its members and the public to achieve this ultimate goal.
Our Section welcomes any interest in the Section or Local Government Law in general. Lawyers practicing government law have varied areas of practice, including constitutional issues, real estate, personal injury, contracts, environmental law, codes enforcement, employment, workers compensation, foreclosures, land use, civil rights and many other areas. Becoming a member of our Section gives you exposure to all of these areas of law.
This year, we are focusing on bridging the gap internally and externally. Internally, we are providing pathways for lawyers of all experience levels to share wisdom and lessons learned through our developing mentorship program headed by our Young Lawyers Committee. We are also embracing technology by utilizing our new Facebook page, electronic mailing list (list serve), and our electronic newsletter, The Agenda. The goal is that all government lawyers have the ability to tap into our great resources and legacy of leadership.
Externally, we have embraced establishing connections with other Florida Bar sections to enhance educational opportunities for our members. We will begin new joint CLE programs next calendar year. Additionally, we have reached out to law students by providing grants to governments interested in hiring paid law school interns and by providing scholarships to law school students interested in local government law.
Our next upcoming event is our Executive Council Meeting on January 26, 2017 at The Florida Bar’s Winter Meeting at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. Additionally, the 40th Annual Local Government Law in Florida Seminar will be held May 12-13, 2017 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando. Both events are an excellent opportunity to network with government lawyers and learn more about the Section. Please contact our Section Chair, Jeannine Williams – Jeannine.Williams@stpete.org – for any questions. Our website is under construction, but feel free to visit while we update (www.locgov.org). We look forward to hearing from you!
