Bar Associations Win Small and Large Affiliate of the Year Awards

Local bar affiliates throughout the State, large and small, contribute immensely to their local communities.  Frequently, though, the larger affiliates get all the time in the limelight.  To remedy this, and highlight smaller affiliates’ terrific work, this year the Awards Committee for Board of Governors of the Young Lawyers Division of the Florida Bar split its “Affiliate of the Year” Award in two – one award for affiliates with less than 250 members, and one award for affiliates with more than 250 members, to give all affiliates a chance to be recognized for their excellent work.

The winners were announced at the Florida Bar Young Lawyer’s Division’s Affiliate Outreach Conference, which took place from January 12 – 14, 2016 at the Grand Floridian Resort at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.  Taking home the prize for Small Affiliate of the Year was the Escambia Santa Rosa Bar Association Young Lawyer Division, with 65 members.  The Broward County Bar Association, Young Lawyers Section, with approximately 600 took home the prize for Large Affiliate of the Year.

During the 2016-2017 year, the Escambia Santa Rosa Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Division increased its membership by thirty percent.  During the year, it hosted a running club on the second Wednesday of every month. In September, it hosted a cruise with members of the judiciary on Frederic G. Levin’s yacht, where members were able to interact with the judiciary on an informal basis.  In December, 2016, it hosted its 10th Annual Breakfast with Santa, allowing foster children 12 and under to share in the holiday spirit. At the event, young lawyers worked with the children to select presents for their foster parents, played games, and served breakfasts to all attendees.  The members of the Escambia Santa Rosa Bar Association also act as mentors for local children, meeting with students on a one-on-one setting providing educational guidance, moral support and serving as role models.

Once again, the Broward County Bar Association’s strong programming netted it the award for large Affiliate of the Year. During the 2016-2017 year, the Young Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association put on several notable events, in addition to the wide range of CLEs that it offers, and its successful Boot Camp series.  On March 29, 2016, the Broward County Bar Association hosted its Young Lawyers Section Charity Poker Tournament.  With more than 100 people in attendance, over $12,000 was raised for local charities including the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Legal Aid, Jewish Federation of Broward County, One Mission/Pediatric Cancer Foundation and Experience Camps.  On May 12, 2016, it hosted its annual Judicial Reception, with more than 250 individual sin attendance, including most of Broward County’s State and Federal judiciary.  On October 29, 2016, it hosted its 29th annual Charity Golf Tournament, raising over $38,000 for 4Kids of South Florida. Members of the Broward County Bar Association also work closely with Legal Aid, and participated in National Adoption Day on November 19, 2016 during which 41 children were adopted.

The YLD is exceptionally proud of the Escambia Santa Rosa and Broward County Bar Associations for their hard work over the last year.
