This month, the Florida Bar YLD recognizes the pro bono efforts of Kelly Peña, an associate at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart. Ms. Peña has dedicated well over 500 hours to serving the legal needs of children in the Miami-Dade community. Since 2014, Ms. Peña has hosted a holiday picnic event with Miami-Dade chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers for current and former foster youth in Miami. The event contains bounce houses, face painting, and other games, and includes over 250 participants from the foster program and members of the judiciary and legal community.
She also serves as an attorney ad litem for foster youth through Lawyers for Children America. In this capacity, she represented a child with acute health issues and ensured that her client’s special needs were met by coordinating counseling, securing special educational accommodations and funding, and even scheduling private tutoring, music lessons and fitness-oriented camps. She is currently working with the child to achieve reunification with her biological mother.
Dedicated to Lawyers for Children America, she also planned and hosted a CLE training to instruct lawyers on how to represent young women and girls in foster care. As a result of the training, Lawyers for Children America was able to offer representation for all of its unassigned cases.
Thank you Kelly for your pro bono service.
