As we shared in last month’s eNewsletter, the Health and Wellness Committee is shifting from awareness to action. Our first active initiative is already underway!
2020 has been a stressful year for many. We are struggling through a pandemic, social injustice, natural disasters, job loss, delayed courts, and remote working, just to name a few. Uncertainty and anxiety seem to be at an all-time high.
As Floridians, we know that when a hurricane is on its way, we need to be prepared. We rush out and stock up on water and toilet paper. When pandemic strikes, we clean the shelves of hand sanitizer and Lysol. What are we doing to prepare for when anxiety strikes?
You can start small and simply take a breath. Many scientific studies have shown that deep breathing triggers body relaxation responses and benefits both physical and mental health. Deep breathing is simple and can be done anywhere at any time. To breathe deeply, breathe in slowly through your nose, allowing your chest and lower belly to rise as you fill your lungs. Let your abdomen expand fully. Now breathe out slowly through your mouth (or your nose, if that feels more natural). Repeat and focus on your breath. It’s that easy.
During the month of September, the Health and Wellness Committee has challenged lawyers to try deep breathing daily. The first week was just for 15 seconds. Each week another 15 seconds is tacked on. Join the challenge and share your experience using #stigmafreeyld.
