Every 20 years, 37 Floridians review and revise our State Constitution. The 2017-2018 Constitution Revision Commission recently convened and started conducting public hearings throughout the State.
The CRC’s public hearings present a great opportunity for you to contribute to this unique process of rewriting our State’s Constitution. Anyone can speak on anything they like. At the first hearing, for example, citizens spoke on a wide range of topics including election laws, environmental issues, and education reform at all levels. Of particular importance to our members, judicial oversight and term limits seems to be a hot topic so far.
If you are interested in attending a public hearing and making your voice heard, you can find the schedule here. If you cannot make it to a hearing, you can watch a live stream here. If you are going to attend, get there early. If the first few hearings are any indication, interest is high this year. In fact, the first hearing was so well-attended that this author had to wait outside the building for an hour before he was even let into an overflow area!
As we mentioned in a previous post, ReviseFL.com is a great resource for all things CRC, and The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division has an archived Benchmarks webinar called Every 20 Years: a Benchmarks presentation on Florida’s Constitution Revision Commission available on its website: at flayld.org.
