YLS kicked off their year with a panel luncheon on August 18, 2016 featuring Judges John Bowman, Mily Rodriguez-Powell, and Raag Singhal from the 17th Circuit bench. The Judges discussed how new attorneys should conduct themselves both in and out of the courtroom to become pillars of professionalism and civility and build a strong reputation from themselves. YLS was able to provide its attending members with 1 CLE credit for this event.
On August 25, 2016, YLS sponsored a social/networking event at the Downtowner in Fort Lauderdale benefitting National Adoption Day, which will be held on November 19, 2016 at the Broward County Courthouse. This event was well-attended and YLS raised over $10,000 for the event. This money will help over 50 foster children find their permanent home and celebrate the occasion in style.
On September 8, 2016, YLS hosted an event at Public House in Fort Lauderdale benefitting First Responders in honor of September 11. Municipal departments within Broward County were invited to enjoy light appetizers and beverages provided by Public House. This event was sponsored by Steinger, Iscoe, & Greene, Cole Scott & Kissane, and Justin B. Weisberg, P.A. The proceeds were split amongst the municipal benevolent associations. YLS raised $2,500 through this endeavor.
On September 15, 2016, YLS welcomed current YLD president Katherine Hurst Miller, Esq. who spoke to 30-40 young/new attorneys about how the Florida Bar’s YLD can be a valuable resource for them and local Affiliate Organizations. The breadth of resources available ranged from CLEs to starting your own law practice. YLS was able to provide its attending members with 1 CLE credit for this event.
Later that night, YLS helped make Broward’s Constitution Day even more impactful by sponsoring the Constitution Day Essay Contest. Three (3) scholarships were awarded to local high school students for their outstanding essays about the Constitution and the impact it has had on their lives.
It has only been one month and YLS has already hosted networking events, offered multiple CLEs, raised $12,500 for charity, and encouraged our youth to reach higher – and we’re not slowing down.
On September 30, 2016, we are hosting our quarterly Breakfast with the Judiciary at the Broward County Courthouse and we are making it free for all Assistant State Attorneys and Public Defenders who are members of the BCBA. This is typically one of our most regularly attended events and with this opportunity, we anticipate our largest crowd yet.
On October 13, 2016, in order to provide benefits to even more of our members, we are hosting three (3) separate regional luncheons in Hollywood, Plantation and North Fort Lauderdale to provide more convenient networking opportunities for our members.
On October 20, 2016, we are hosting our annual Charity Golf Tournament Happy Hour to promote our 29th Annual Charity Golf Tournament which will take place on October 29, 2016 for the benefit of 4Kids of South Florida.
On October 27, 2016, YLS will once again be participating in Read for the Record, wherein our members will spend their morning reading to local pre-K and Kindergarten classes. YLS will also be donating $1,500 to help support this early education initiative.
Finally, on October 28, 2016, YLS is hosting the New Attorney Orientation breakfast to welcome Broward’s new attorneys to the practice, introducing them to Judges from various divisions within the Circuit and taking them on a courthouse tour.
