Judge Kelsey on a trip to Yosemite National Park where she earned lots of Fitbit merit badges from all of the hiking and climbing she did. She highly recommends spending time outdoors as a way to unplug.
Judge Susan Kelsey, First District Court of Appeal
When I’m feeling stressed I…take a break, go outside, take deep breaths, and pray for strength.
My preferred method of exercise is… walking, supplemented by weight and elliptical workouts at the gym several times a week.
I am most productive during the day when I… shut out distractions and focus on the task. It helps if I really like what I’m doing (which I do).
The best advice I’ve received about balancing work and life is… if it’s too hard to balance, you’re working at the wrong place.
The one thing I would tell a stressed out and overwhelmed young lawyer is… it gets better, but don’t lose yourself in the process.
The best way to deal with a difficult colleague or opposing counsel is… be really nice to them.
My favorite hobby is… gardening and yard work.
When I can’t fall asleep I… thank God for each of my family and friends by name, and pray for their needs.
The one thing that concerns me most about the future of the legal profession is… crumbling standards for civility and professionalism.
The most relaxing vacation I ever took was… biking and walking at Callaway Gardens.
