Every 20 years, 37 Floridians review and revise our State Constitution.

Beginning in 2017, the Attorney General and 36 appointees – 15 by the Governor, 9 by the Speaker of the House, 9 by the President of the Senate, and 3 by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court – will convene to conduct public hearings, consider proposed Constitutional amendments, and select amendments to place on the 2018 ballot.

As lawyers, we should care about Florida’s Constitution Revision Commission because it will likely affect our profession. As young lawyers, we should take time to learn about the CRC because we likely have never really seen it in action. After all, the last CRC met in 1997-1998 – when even the oldest “young lawyers” were still in high school.

With the next CRC approaching, several education tools are beginning to emerge. For example, the LeRoy Collins Institute (in partnership with other institutions, including The Florida Bar) has launched the “Partnership for Revising Florida’s Constitution,” which maintains a website at ReviseFL.com. In addition, The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division will be presenting a Benchmarks webinar next month called Every 20 Years: a Benchmarks presentation on Florida’s Constitution Revision Commission.
